In the 19th century, Irish and Scottish immigrants brought their Halloween customs to the United States, and it was in North America that Halloween became highly commercialised and re-popularised with modern elements like trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving, and haunted houses.
By the 20th century, these Americanised Halloween traditions made their way back to the UK, where Halloween saw a revival, particularly from the 1980s onwards.
People started using pumpkins to carve their ghoulish designs instead of the more traditional turnip. (Although the turnips looked far more terrifying from what we've seen!)
