Witches and witchcraft have been around globally for several centuries; from ancient times to modern day, and can be found in various cultures and religions.
In the past, women were disproportionately targeted in historical witch hunts due to societal views about female power and independence. Women who defied traditional roles or held knowledge (e.g., healers or midwives) were more likely to be labelled as witches.
In the early modern period, Europe experienced large-scale witch hunts, with tens of thousands (mainly women) being accused of witchcraft and executed. The peak of these hunts was in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, particularly in places like Germany, France, and the British Isles. These trials were often based on superstition, misogyny, and social tensions. The most famous being the Salem witch trials of 1692 in colonial America.
Over time, the image of the witch transformed from an evil outcast to a symbol of modern spirituality and empowerment.
